Semax is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide, Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro: residues 4 to 7 of the stress hormone ACTH with a Pro-Gly-Pro tail added to slow breakdown. It is studied for whether a hormone fragment can raise BDNF, a protein that supports nerve-cell survival and adaptation, without the hormone's effect on the adrenal glands. The evidence is mainly from rats, with Russian clinical studies in stroke patients that lack described blinding or placebo control.
